Petitioning Minister for Road Transport & Highways (Nitin Gadkari)

Right To Have Women Toilets On Highways

Gayathri Sri

The average Indian man, urban and rural, seems never to have learnt is how not to urinate in public spaces. This is due to lack of awareness of basic hygiene. The Indian male is also insensitive to women’s need for privacy while answering nature’s call.

It’s found on all the highways of INDIA while travelling by Bus for long hours women don’t have toilet facilities and were left with no option except to use road side bushes. This situation is not good for the privacy and security  of women. Some women just stop their urination for longer periods until they reach the destination so as to avoid urinating on road side which is against their privacy.

Due to the above stated reasons the women always prefer journey by Train instead of by Bus. Only in case the train tickets are unavailable families plan for a journey by Bus. In case the women travels single by Bus the risk factor increases due to non-availability of the toilets.

The highway toilets are the basic right of every women in India. The question here is of a girl’s modesty, privacy, health and safety. The survey found that 99% Indian travellers said there is a need for more toilets across tourism destinations and spots in the country. Interestingly, highways were given the highest number of votes on where we need more toilets, topping the list at 92%. While only 85% male travellers voted for highways, 98% women travellers expressed a need for more toilets on highways.

Women’s safety: It is important to stress that it is not just a matter of modesty, privacy, health and hygiene; more urgently, it is a matter of women’s safety. A young woman is most vulnerable when she goes out to relieve herself. While darkness is friendly to her “modesty”, it puts her safety at risk.

I request you all to sign in and share the petition to the people of INDIA.

Toilets on road stops are either unavailable or so filthy that they are unusable. It’s sheer torture for women to travel for 12+ hours in any bus in any route in India and not be able to go to the toilet.

Safety, approach, privacy, decency and maintaining the dignity of Women should be uppermost when selecting sites, so that even women travelling alone feel safe. Responsibility for all this will have to be fixed, perhaps with the Highways Authority, the consortium operating the highway, or a service station alongside whose premisis the facility exists.
