Petitioning Railway minister, ministry of railways and P.M

We demand safety for women commuters in Trains

Shaik Asha Parvina

Crimes against women are on the rise in local trains, especially in city of Mumbai. Women commuters on local trains frequently face molestation and vulgar comments. The crimes against women are perpetrated at nights which is the timing for women commuters to return from their jobs.

The women commuters in long distance travelling trains are at greater risk at night times.

To stop the crimes against women commuters the Railway Police should be always alert and reach the place quickly in case of call for help. The security helpline 182, which is round the clock is good for women in danger.

But as the train will be moving theres lot of background noise to provide details over call and the phone signal is not available in all the places while journey. The details to provide over call are too many like train number, berth number and seat number.

Best solution is to fix the cctv in each compartment and on all platforms, availability of Command Centre in each train and availability of Police Personnel in each train.

1. Recently, A 24-year-old woman employee of Infosys was hacked to death at Chennai’s Nungambakkam railway station at 6.30 am on Friday.  Swathi was on her way to work at Mahindra City, about 60 km south of Chennai.

She was waiting to board a train when a young man attacked her with a sickle, eyewitnesses said. This is the sixth murder in the city in four weeks. Five of the murders took place in public view.

The Nungambakkam station platform has no CCTV cameras, but the movement of the attacker after the murder was identified from CCTVs installed outside the station, police said.

2. An incident that took place on Thursday night is raising serious concern about women's safety in Mumbai's local trains. A 22-year-old female MBA student sitting in the ladies compartment in a Churchgate-bound train was stripped and molested by a man in his 20s. He jumped off the train before he could be caught.According to Zee, this incident took place at around 11 pm on Thursday night

 3. CHENNAI: In an recent incident which yet again highlights poor women safety, A 23-year-old railway employee was molested by an unidentified gang near Singaperumal Koil railway station on Tuesday night, while she was on duty.

After they got the information, the Government Railway Police Personnel reached  the station and interrogated the woman. “She orally gave a complaint, but refused to give a written one. But, we will forward a report on the incident to our superior officers,” a GRP police personnel told Express.

Women are harassed not only in the night or evening but also in the day time at their home, working places, or other places like street, club, etc. It is found through the survey that the reason of sexual harassment is the lack of gender-friendly environment and improper functional infrastructure such as consumption of alcohol and drugs in open area, lack of adequate lighting, safe public toilets, sidewalks, lack of effective police service, lack of properly working helpline numbers, etc. A huge

Pepper spray can also be proved as a useful self-defence tool however it has a drawback that some people cannot be harmed through it even after full-face spray. It may not stop the attacker so women should not depend on it completely and use other techniques also.

Escape and run is also a good way to reduce some risks of women whenever they become in problem. They should never go with any unknown person alone at some unknown places.

Generally most of the women are gifted with sixth sense which they must use whenever they become in some problem. They should at once avoid any situation which they feel bad for them.

Self defence techniques are the first and foremost thing to which each and every woman must be aware of and get proper self-defense training for their safety. They must be aware of some effective defence techniques such as kicks to groin, blocking punches, etc.

Women as travellers are not recognised – they are restricted to a single ‘box’ - ladies compartment. In a ten bogey train, there are 8 compartments for men and only two for women. Women commuters have the right to move freely and without any restrictions. They should also be able to access ‘general’ compartments without fear of violence or assault. Other commuters should also recognise the right of women to travel in all compartments.

The whole issue of the ladies’ compartment/train is controversial. And in an equal’ world, we would not ask for either ladies’ trains or ladies’ compartments. However, till that happens, more ‘only women’ spaces would be needed to provide safe and harassment-free travel.

Personally i am little divided on this cause as much as i want safety and security i also dont want cameras in every public location cause in the current pace A.I is not that far and if AI is achieved the technology will be used to monitor and control others which is kinda normal since both Security and Freedom are on the opposite sides of the same coin but i suppose for now we need Security

i think Best solution is to fix the cctv in each compartment and on all platforms, availability of Command Centre in each train and availability of Police Personnel in each train.

Crime is not because of not installing CCTVs. crime is due to publicc lack of awareness on how the crime is caused. Public should be aware of things happening around, they should be sound and alert all time to face any challenging situations. Public should come forward to help other peoples help on when they are hurt or injured. Only installing police or cctv cannot bring down the crime. People should have the mind set to help others. By this way i would not object the CCTV installing on all pub

I commute by train every day to work from perambur loco works to Tiruvanmiyur and I see 1000s of women commuters travelling along side me. Several of them molested by the damn railway workers themselves. My very own wife was a victim in front of my eyes at perambur railway station while getting off the Madras Beach - Vellore Fast Passenger train several months back in a FIRST CLASS Compartment. The sick IDIOT was boarding the train while we were getting off the train. Had I got a minute to real

We need to give high priority for womens safety in trains by providing CCTV cameras in railway coaches and it needs to be monitor 24/7. It will help to take quick action on molesters.

All human being, including woman needs to be treated equally and with self respect. No woman should be abused and government should take responsibility for safe guarding woman, children and old people.
